What an affiliate link is

A few of the SaaS companies we review run referral programs. When one does, the "Visit" buttons on its review point to a tracked link, and if you sign up for a paid plan through it, the company may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra; the price on their checkout page is the price anyone gets.

Plenty of tools we cover have no program at all, open-source projects especially. Their buttons go straight to the official site, and the review gets exactly the same treatment.

How we mark them

Affiliate links and paid sponsor slots carry rel="sponsored nofollow", which tells search engines the link is paid. Links to tools we earn nothing from are ordinary links. Any page with an affiliate button also carries one short note near the top saying so, so you don't have to hunt for it.

On top of that, the footer of every page repeats the notice and links back here. It's never more than a scroll away.

What money can't change

Affiliate income never moves a score, a ranking or a verdict. The review, the rating out of five and the list of cons get written the same way whether or not the vendor pays referrals. A tool with a generous commission can still get a middling score and a long list of limits, and if a cheaper or open-source option does the job better, the review says so and links to it.

Reviews aren't for sale, and neither is a spot higher up a list.

Sponsors are separate

Beyond affiliate links, companies can buy clearly labeled sponsor placements, which are listed on ouradvertise page. A sponsor slot is an ad and looks like one. Buying it doesn't touch the sponsor's own review, its rating, or where it appears in categories and comparisons.
